Die aktuelle Renaissance der Filmpaläste in Gestalt der sogenannten Multiplex-Kinos ruft
unwillkürlich die zwanziger Jahre dieses Jahrhunderts in Erinnerung, als in den großen
deutschen Städten und vor allem in Berlin ein beispielloser Bauboom von Lichtspieltheatern
und Großkinos einsetzte. Bekannte und weniger bekannte Architekten widmeten sich mit
phantasievollem Elan der neuen Bauaufgabe, attraktive und in die jeweilige stadträumliche
Umgebung sich einfügende Häuser für die Vorführung von Filmen zu gestalten,
in denen das dergestalt angelockte und versammelte Publikum in eine festliche Stimmung versetzt
werden sollte. Einige wenige Fachpublikationen aus jenen Jahren (u.a. von Paul Zucker), die
sich hauptsächlich an Bauherren und Architekten richteten, begleiteten diese Entwicklung.
Aus der Fülle des Baugeschehens wurden dort repräsentative Beispiele verschiedenster
Baumeister zusammengestellt. Der F.E. Hübsch Verlag legte im Jahre 1928 in seiner Reihe
'Neue Werkkunst' erstmals eine Monographie zu einem speziellen Kinoarchitekten vor. Sie
war dem inzwischen das Stadtbild Berlins nachhaltig prägenden Architekten Fritz Wilms
(1886-1958) gewidmet, der vor allem mit seinen riesigen zwischen 2.000 und 2.500 Zuschauer
fassenden Mercedes-Palästen
in den Bezirken Wedding (1926) und Neukölln (1927) die Aufmerksamkeit des Publikums und
der Fachwelt erregt hatte. Auf stets neue, experimentelle Weise, sich dabei im Spannungsfeld
von Neoklassizismus, Expressionismus und Neue Sachlichkeit bewegend, gelang es Wilms, mit seinen überwiegend
ranglosen Lichtspielhäusern den Begriff des Volkstheaters für das Medium Kino zu
adaptieren. Lange vernachlässigt sind in den letzten Jahren die topographischen, historischen
und ästhetischen Dimensionen des Lichtspieltheaterbaus in Berlin detailliert erforscht
worden. Der Reprint würdigt zusammen mit dem kommentierenden Nachwort die Leistung eines
bedeutenden Kinoarchitekten der zwanziger Jahre, will aber zugleich hindeuten auf die Vielfalt
architektonischer Lösungen für die vermutlich spannendste und aufschlußreichste

die Idee und Arbeit des Kinos von unten läßt an der Notwendigkeit der bisherigen "Geschäfts"entwicklung

Ein Menschenleben - eng verbunden mit einem der schönsten und wichtigsten
deutschen Premierenkinos - dem Berliner Gloria Palast.
Heinz Frick erzählt in seinem Buch nicht nur Geschichten seines Lebens, sondern
auch eine Kulturgeschichte des Kinos. Farbig und mit urbanem Humor bringt er Pointen
aus der Kaiserzeit, der Weimarer Republik, dem "Tertium Imperium" und
der geteilten Stadt. 1910 in Berlin geboren, trat Heinz Frick (nach verschiedenen
Umwegen) 1933 dem 'Gloria Palast', dem nobelsten Kino der 'Ufa', als Billet-Kontrolleur
bei. Er blieb dem 'Gloria Palast', bald als Theaterleiter, über vierzig Jahre
verbunden. Das Schicksal des repräsentativen Lichtspieltheaters steht im

In den 20er Jahren kam es in Berlin zu einem beispiellosen Bauboom von Lichtspieltheatern.
Unter den schließlich fast 400 Kinos fielen besonders die großen Häuser
durch ihre herausragende baukünstlerische Qualität, ihre dominante städtebauliche
Wirkung und ihre neuesten technischen Ausstattungen auf. Die Netwürfe Berliner
Kinoarchitekten fanden weltweit Anerkennung. Berlin, in der Weimarer Republik
das bedeutendste Zentrum des Theaters, der Filmproduktion aber auch der deutschen
Architekten-Avantgarde, bot ideale Voraussetzungen für diese Entwicklung.
Heute sind nur noch sehr wenige Lichtspieltheater in meist ruinösem Zustand
erhalten. Mit der Untersuchung von Berliner Lichtspieltheatern aus der Zeit zwischen
1919 und 1930 liegt nun eine umfassende Darstellung dieser Bauaufgabe im einstigen

100 Jahre Kino sind Anlaß, um zurückzublicken und zu fragen, welche Rolle Kino in
einer jungen Stadt wie Bremerhaven gespielt hat. Das neue Medium ist von Anfang an auf großes
Interesse gestoßen. Schon die Vorstellungen in den frühen Kinematographen-Theatern
liefen vor vollen Rängen. In den 20er und 30er Jahren entstanden neben den "Flohkinos" repräsentative
Prachtbauten. In den 50er Jahren erreichte der Kino-Boom - wie überall in Deutschland
- seinen Höhepunkt. Damals wurden in Bremerhaven jährlich mehr als zwei Millionen
Besucher gezählt. Heute sind die Zahlen so enttäuschend, daß der einzige Bremerhavener
Kino-Betreiber, die Union-Kinobetriebsgesellschaft, Hamburg, sie vornehm verschweigt.
Mit diesem Buch wird kein Blick in die Zukunft geworfen. Es will festhalten, was längst
zur Legende geworden ist. Dazu gehören nicht nur Namen und Daten, dazu gehören die
Erinnerungen derjenigen, die mit dem Kino aufgewachsen sind, als Besucher, Programmgestalter
oder Vorführer, sei es in den 30er, den 50er, 60er oder 70er Jahren. Die beteiligten Autoren
versuchen, verschiedene Aspekte der Bremerhavener Kino-Geschichte zu beleuchten, sie erheben

Früher als die Amtsstädte des Remstals erhielt das Dorf am Rande der Industrieregion
Stuttgart einen eigenen Kinobau. Das Fellbacher Lichtspielhaus entstand 1911 auf der grünen
Wiese, zwischen dem Oberdorf und den gerade im Entstehen befindlichen Neubaugebieten beim
Bahnhof. In den 50er Jahren ließ die Nachfrage dann zwei weitere

Von der Kaiserkrone zum CinemaxX

Am 1. Oktober 1896 zeigte das Varieté Kaiserkrone die ersten kinematographischen Bilder
in der Stadt Kiel. Es folgte eine bewegte Kinogeschichte, die einen Einschnitt vor und nach
dem 2. Weltkrieg erfuhr. So musste der jüdische Leiter der Kaiserkrone 1935 das Kino an
eine 'arische Führung' abgeben, andere Filmpaläste wurden im Krieg zerstört.
Insgesamt gab es in den über hundert Jahren etwa einhundert Kinos in Kiel. 1995 eröffnete
schließlich das CinemaxX mit 3000 Plätzen. Der Band bietet allen Cineasten Erinnerungen
an die 'alten Zeiten' und beinhaltet zugleich ein Stück Kieler Kulturgeschichte. Der Aufbau

Als Jahrmarktsattraktion fand der Kinematograph um 1900 den Weg in die junge Industriestadt
Ludwigshafen. Mit Staunen sahen die Menschen die lebenden Bilder. Schon 1906 öffneten
die ersten Kinos ihre Pforten. Zu den frühen Leinwandstars gehörten auch Wilhelm
Dieterle und Hermann Basler. Die beiden in Ludwigshafen geborenen Schauspieler machten sich
auch als Regisseure einen Namen. Die Filme lockten die Menschen in die Filmtheater und ließen
eine "blühende" Kinolandschaft entstehen. In den 1950-er und 1960-er Jahren waren es in

"Unter lebhafter Anteilnahme des Münchener Publikums" flimmerten im Juli 1896 in Gabriels
Panoptikum die ersten "lebenden Photographien" über die Leinwand. Die Münchner Kinogeschichte
hatte begonnen. Man drängte sich ins Wanderkino auf dem Oktoberfest oder in primitive
Lokalitäten, die sich mit verheißungsvollen Namen wie "Weltkinematograph" schmückten.
Die "neue Kunst" des Films und seine "Tempel", die Lichtspieltheater, fanden aber nicht nur
Freunde. Die Münchner Obrigkeit wollte nicht nur bestimmen, was das Münchner Publikum
zu sehen bekam, ihr Einfluss erstreckte sich auch auf die Genehmigung, Verbreitung und sogar
das Aussehen der Münchner Kinos. Der Rahmen für die Entwicklung der Lichtspieltheater
wurde auf erfindungsreiche Weise immer wieder gesprengt. In den zwanziger Jahren entstanden
dann die großen Kinos, die später auch zum Schauplatz der propagandistischen Inszenierungen
der Nationalsozialisten wurden. Die Texte behandeln die vielfältigen Aspekte der Münchner
Kinogeschich te im Wandel der gesellschaftlichen und politischen Entwicklungen. Illustriert

Kino ohne Land

Welche Bedeutung haben Kinos, hat ein kulturelles Angebot am Land? Und welche Rolle nehmen
dabei die KünstlerInnen ein, die ein Projekt am Land umsetzen? Einen Sommer lang haben
die Autorinnen das Tonkino Haitzendorf, das seit vielen Jahren nicht mehr in Betrieb ist, im
Rahmen einer Ausstellung wiederbelebt und temporär bespielt. Die Kinder saßen vorne
und die Großen weiter hinten, wir Freundinnen waren in einer Reihe. Es waren immer sehr
viele Bekannte im Kino, die meisten aus dem Dorf. Von auswärts sind die Leute nur sonntags
gekommen. Besonders bei den Heimatfilmen haben wir herzlich gelacht. Mittlerweile gibt es im
Kino von Haitzendorf keine Leinwand mehr; auch keinen Projektor im Vorführraum. Übrig
bleibt das Landkino als ein Modell, um von verschiedenen Richtungen aus über das Kino
nachzudenken. Mit dieser Sammlung von Projekten und Gedanken zu einem alternativen Kino soll,
ausgehend von der einzigartigen und großartigen Institution Kino, über den Kinosaal
und seinen jeweiligen Ort hinausgeschaut werden. Dabei kommen jene Initiativen in den Blick,
die eine Hommage an das Kino bieten und die Bedeutung von Laufbildern in einer Zeit hinterfragen,

der Lichtspieltheater am Beispiel von Dresden. Neben einer ausführlichen Beschreibung

steht im Gegensatz zur vollständigen planbaren Benutzung von
Architekturen. Dennoch gibt es Analogien und Parallelitäten bei der Wahrnehmung
von Filmen und Räumen. Dennoch, Architektur ist nicht Film, Film ist
nicht Architektur. Raumlichtspiele sind sie beide, und sie begegnen sich im Kino.
Vor diesem Hintergrund entstand die Idee, im Rahmen eines Studien- bzw. Entwurfsprojektes
mit Architekturstudenten aktuelle und tragfähige Gestaltungskonzepte
zu entwickeln.
Die Publikation enthält acht ausgewählte charakteristische Projekte, die durch
Zeichnungen, Modelle, Renderings und Beschreibungen dokumentiert sind. Die
Betreuung der Projekte erfolgte am Lehrstuhl Entwerfen und Innenraumgestaltung

Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts ging für die Menschen ein
lang ersehnter Traum in Erfüllung. Wissenschaftlern
und Erfindern war es erstmals gelungen, Photographien
in Lebensgröße auf eine Leinwand zu projizieren und
in Bewegung zu versetzen. Der Siegeszug des Kinos
begann.
Auch in Bamberg begeisterten bereits zu
Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts erste Kurzfilme mit
Titeln wie "Reisen und Abenteuer im Jahre 2000" oder
"Der Käfer in der Hose" die Bevölkerung auf Messen
und Kirchweihen.
Im Jahr 2007 feierte das Bamberger
Kino sein 100-jähriges Jubiläum. Anlass genug, um
zurück zu blicken, Antworten auf Fragen zu finden,
warum es beispielsweise in einer Kleinstadt wie
Bamberg zeitweise über zehn Kinos gab und all die
kuriosen Geschichten zusammen zu tragen, die es über
die Spielstätten in Bamberg zu berichten gibt.
Dieses Werk wurde im Wintersemester 2007/2008 am
Lehrstuhl für Europäische Ethnologie der Universität

Über das Wanderkino wissen wir bislang recht wenig: Seine Blütezeit in ganz Europa
war zwischen 1896 und 1914. Damals wurden auf Jahrmärkten und in größeren Sälen
unterhaltsame Filmprogramme aus märchenhaften Trickfilmen, lustigen Sketchen und Aktualitäten
gezeigt. Nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg gingen politische Parteien, Kirchen und Wirtschaftsunternehmen
noch bis in die 1960er Jahre mit Wanderkinos auf Werbetour. Bei der Etablierung des neuen Mediums
Film spielten Wanderkinos die entscheidende Rolle. Selbst in Kleinstädte und Dörfer
brachten sie das 'technische Wunder der lebenden Photographien'. Die Programme waren international:
Die meisten Filme kamen aus Paris, viele aus Großbritannien, Italien und den USA. Die
größte Attraktion waren aber stets Lokalaufnahmen: Die örtliche Bevölkerung
wurde beim Verlassen der Kirche nach dem Sonntagsgottesdienst oder beim Verlassen einer Fabrik
zum Feierabend gedreht und konnte sich selbst 'in lebender Größe und Bewegung' auf

Though nearly forgotten now, the nickelodeon was, in its brief moment, the most
popular place of amusement in America. Between 1902, when the first nickelodeon
appeared, and 1910, 8,000 to 10,000 of these small theatres (deliberately small
to avoid licencing costs) sprang up across the country to meet the public's seemingly
insatiable demand for moving pictures. Bowers, a noted authority on early theatres
and theatre instruments offers a primarily pictorial tour of theatres of the 1905
to 1915 era. Emphasis is on the rapid growth of theatres and changes in theatre
design, from the early nickelodeons (usually converted storefronts with onereel
films projected on a bed sheet), to the era of the movie palace and feature length
film. Bowers documents the heyday of the nickelodeon through the use of primary
source material, including photographs, advertisements, trade journal excerpts,
and fan magazine articles. He also focuses on the development of automatic musical
instruments (elaborate forms of the player piano that could reproduce all the
sounds of a large band) and the growth of the theatre organ industry, especially
Wurlitzer, the major producer, and the innovations of organ designer Robert Hope-Jones.
While giving the nonspecialist a good feet for the era, the information on theatre
specifications and operation, and the detailed lists of film companies and Wurlitzer

The Balaban and Katz Theater Corporation perfected the "movie palace”
concept in Chicago, reating an extremely popular pastime that contributed greatly

experience with the finest live performances and service. They built ornate theaters,

shows between the movies with the likes of Bob Hope, Louis Armstrong, and Benny

Cleveland's Playhouse Square

In the early 1920s, five opulent theaters—the Allen, the Ohio, the State, the Palace,
and the Hanna—opened on a stretch of Euclid Avenue in Cleveland. They offered legitimate

citizens of this booming industrial city. Unfortunately, the introduction of television and
the flight to the suburbs in the 1950s and 1960s turned the theaters into ghost palaces destined

The winter of 1917-18 found the United States in a general upheaval. A large percentage of
the world's population was at war and the United States itself was fully occupied with an unprecedented
mass mobilization of its military forces, which were rushing headlong into an era of modern

Commission on Training Camp Activities, these theatres aimed to produce "morally uplifting" plays

Ausgleich für diese Anforderungen der modernen Städte und des modernen Großstadtlebens
deuten. Das Kino verlängert die städtische Ordnung, indem es den bis dahin am meisten
disziplinierten und passiven Zuschauer verlangt, zugleich aber entschädigt es diesen mit
einem ebenso weitreichenden Angebot, diese den Alltag bestimmende Ordnung zu verlassen. Stadt
und Kino werden wechselseitig aufeinander bezogen und jeweils aus diesem Verhältnis heraus
entworfen, wobei davon ausgegangen wird, daß sich Kontinuitäten und Zäsuren
auf beiden Seiten dieser Konstellation zeigen. Ausgehend von der Auffassung des Kinos als einer
Situation werden im Folgenden 'klassische' Situationen, über deren Bedeutung
als Kino breiter Konsens herrscht, berücksichtigt, ebenso wie 'alternative',
die ihrerseits ausgehend von diesem Konsens ihre Reform- und Störaktionen verorten und
